Nobody is born knowing how to garden

We started with a north-facing patch of clay, a bag of compost and far too much confidence. Most of it died.

What survived became this site: plain, unhurried guides for people who have just got the keys, inherited a garden they don’t understand, or finally want the house to feel like theirs. No jargon, no forty-step routines, and no pretending that a first season goes perfectly.

Start wherever you like. Most people begin in one of five places.
