Outdoor string lights are one of those rare things that can make a backyard look significantly better in about twenty minutes.

Hang them over a patio, between a few posts or underneath a pergola and suddenly the space feels like somewhere you want to stay after the sun goes down. The problem is that there are hundreds of nearly identical options online, and some of them are definitely better at surviving actual outdoor weather than others.

I looked for lights with consistently good reviews, outdoor-rated construction and bulbs that give off a warm glow rather than that harsh blue-white light that can make a patio feel strangely industrial.

These eight stand out for different reasons, whether you need an inexpensive basic set, solar lights for somewhere without an outlet or smart lights you can control from your phone.

Quick look: the best outdoor string lights

Best overall: Brightown G40 LED Outdoor String Lights
Best budget: addlon LED Outdoor String Lights
Best solar: Brightech Ambience Pro Solar String Lights
Best smart: Govee Outdoor String Lights 2
Best cafe-style: Enbrighten Vintage LED Cafe Lights
Best color-changing: Enbrighten Color-Changing Vintage LED Cafe Lights
Best heavy-duty: Feit Electric LED Outdoor String Lights
Best for a firelight glow: Brightech Ambience Pro Flickering Flame String Lights

1. Brightown G40 LED Outdoor String Lights

Best overall

If you want classic warm patio lights without a lot of extra features, the Brightown G40 set is probably the easiest place to start. The 100-foot strand includes 50 LED bulbs, so you get enough length to cover a good-sized patio or backyard without immediately needing a second set.

What I like most about this style is the smaller globe shape. It gives you that cozy outdoor café look without the bulbs feeling enormous overhead. The warm 2700K light is also much nicer for patios than cooler LEDs.

Independent testing gave these particularly high marks for light quality, appearance and value. The bulbs also include clips, which makes installation easier if you are attaching them to an existing wire or similar support.

Good to know: This particular 100-foot strand is not expandable, and the bulbs are glass rather than shatterproof plastic. If your lights will hang low around kids or somewhere they might get knocked around, I would choose one of the shatterproof options below instead.

Best for: Patios, pergolas and larger backyard seating areas.

2. addlon LED Outdoor String Lights

Best budget option

Addlon is one of the better choices if you want the heavier café-light look without spending a lot. Their classic outdoor strand uses warm Edison-style bulbs with a substantial weather-resistant cord, and there are multiple lengths depending on how much space you need to cover.

The shatterproof bulbs are a big advantage over glass if you plan to leave the lights outside for most of the season. They are also dimmer compatible, so you can bring the brightness down once dinner is over and you just want a softer glow.

Reviews are generally very strong, especially for appearance, value and durability through normal rain and wind. There are occasional reports of bulbs arriving loose or individual bulbs failing, so I would tighten everything during installation and keep the spare bulb somewhere you will remember.

Best for: Anyone who wants the classic Edison-bulb look without paying premium prices.

3. Brightech Ambience Pro Solar String Lights

Best solar string lights

If your perfect string-light location happens to be nowhere near an outlet, this is the set I would choose.

The Brightech Ambience Pro lights use a separate solar panel and automatically turn on once it gets dark. The full-size Edison-style bulbs look much more like regular patio lights than tiny decorative solar lights, and the bulbs are both weather-resistant and shatterproof.

These have done especially well in hands-on testing for durability and appearance. The biggest limitation is length. Some versions are shorter than a traditional plug-in strand, so a large patio may need more than one set.

Solar lights also depend on the panel getting enough direct sun. If your patio is completely shaded all day, I would go with plug-in lights instead.

Best for: Pergolas, gardens, sheds and backyard areas where running an extension cord would be annoying.

4. Govee Outdoor String Lights 2

Best smart outdoor string lights

These are the choice for someone who wants their string lights to do more than just turn on and off.

Govee’s Outdoor String Lights 2 can be controlled through the app, dimmed, changed to different colors and set to preset scenes. You can also create warm white everyday lighting, so they do not have to look like party lights unless you want them to.

The longer configurations are especially useful for big backyards because multiple strands can work together. They also scored very well in hands-on testing for appearance, durability and light quality.

The main consideration is Wi-Fi. The controller needs a reliable connection to your home network for the smart features to work properly, so I would check your outdoor signal before installing 100-plus feet of them at the far end of the yard.

Best for: Large patios, entertaining and anyone who already likes smart-home lighting.

5. Enbrighten Vintage LED Cafe Lights

Best cafe-style lights

If appearance is the priority, these are probably my favourite of the traditional plug-in options.

Enbrighten’s Vintage Cafe Lights have old-fashioned Edison-style bulbs hanging from short drop sockets, which gives them more of a permanent restaurant-patio look than a lightweight strand of party lights.

The acrylic bulbs are shatterproof, the cord is heavy-duty and the 48-foot strand can connect with additional strands if you need to cover a much bigger space. Hands-on testing gave them particularly high scores for durability and appearance.

They cost more than many Amazon basics, but they are the kind of lights I would buy if I planned to install them properly and leave them up rather than take them down after every gathering.

Best for: Pergolas, covered patios and outdoor dining areas where you want the lighting to look permanent.

6. Enbrighten Color-Changing Vintage LED Cafe Lights

Best color-changing option

If you like the durability of café lights but want more flexibility, this version from Enbrighten gives you both traditional warm lighting and color options.

The 48-foot strand has solid acrylic bulbs rather than fragile glass, and the included controls let you adjust brightness, set timers and switch between different colors and combinations.

I like these more than inexpensive RGB party lights because the strand itself still looks like a proper outdoor café-light setup when you are using a simple warm colour. Then you can switch things up for holidays or parties without hanging another set of lights.

Best for: Families, entertaining and anyone who wants one set of lights for regular evenings and holidays.

7. Feit Electric LED Outdoor String Lights

Best heavy-duty option

Feit Electric’s outdoor string lights are noticeably more substantial than a lot of inexpensive strands. The cord is thick and flexible, the Edison-style bulbs are shatterproof and the strands can be connected if you need more length.

They are also dimmer compatible, which is important because brighter café lights can be a little much when you are just sitting outside at night. At full brightness they can provide useful illumination for eating or reading, then you can turn them down for atmosphere.

They performed well in independent hands-on testing, with durability being one of the biggest positives. They are heavier than decorative string lights, though, so hang them from proper hooks or a support cable rather than expecting a couple of tiny adhesive clips to hold everything up.

Best for: Permanent or semi-permanent installations where durability matters more than keeping the strand lightweight.

8. Brightech Ambience Pro Flickering Flame String Lights

Best for a firelight glow

These are a little different from everything else on the list. Instead of a standard steady bulb, the LEDs create a flickering effect that looks a bit like tiny flames inside the bulbs.

They are solar powered, so they work especially well around a garden seating area, campsite-style backyard setup or somewhere you want atmosphere without adding another extension cord.

The bulbs are weather-resistant and shatterproof, and the flame effect performed surprisingly well in independent testing. They are not the option I would choose if you need enough light to eat dinner by, but that is not really what they are for.

Best for: Fire-pit areas, small garden seating spots and purely decorative lighting.

What to look for before buying outdoor string lights

The first thing I would check is whether the lights are actually rated for outdoor use. A string of inexpensive indoor fairy lights might survive a covered porch for a while, but anything exposed to rain and changing temperatures should be designed for it.

After that, look at the bulb material. Shatterproof plastic or acrylic makes sense if the lights will stay up permanently, hang near trees or be anywhere kids might hit them with a ball. Glass can look beautiful, but you need to be more careful during installation and bad weather.

Light colour matters too. For that warm patio glow, look for something around 2700K to 3000K. Cooler white bulbs tend to feel brighter and less cozy.

Finally, measure before you buy. A 48-foot strand does not necessarily give you 48 feet of illuminated space because some of that length may be lead wire between the plug and first bulb. You also need extra length if you want the strand to drape rather than run completely straight.

Solar or plug-in?

I would choose plug-in lights anywhere you already have a convenient outdoor outlet. They provide consistent brightness regardless of the weather and make more sense for a patio you use regularly.

Solar wins when the location is difficult to reach with power. It is perfect for a garden pergola, shed or seating area farther from the house, as long as you can position the solar panel somewhere that receives good direct sunlight.

Neither option is automatically better. The right one mostly depends on where you want the lights.

How many feet of string lights do you need?
